"Global Warming" '09
My thinking for this piece started with the 18 x 52? challenge, some flat disc beads that looked like turquoise and a technique for shaping polyester organza. The grey polyps started as two sheets of polyester organza sewn together with the little starbursts of blue thread, wrapped around small roundish rocks, tied with rubber bands, and dropped into boiling water for 10 min.
The fabric holds what ever shape it was boiled in permanently. I printed the fish, which I had gleaned from photos taken at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the sign on pre-prepared paper backed cotton. All are captured under netting and held in place with the sewing of the beads onto the piece. The keys to global warming are down at the bottom of the piece in the muck.
